Monday Intel N°4: Defense and robotics seed money is hiring

Fresh seed and Series A rounds in LA, SF and NY point to founding engineering demand in defense, humanoids and AI agents.

Every Monday we publish one honest observation about where founding engineering demand is forming. This week the signal is in the funding announcements.

The week in founding-team demand

Several early rounds landed this week where the first engineering hires will define the company.

  • Defense hardware, Los Angeles: Furientis raised a $25M seed led by Benchmark to mass-produce low-cost interceptors, and says the capital goes toward hiring elite talent.
  • Humanoids, San Francisco: Minerva Humanoids came out of stealth with about $10M in pre-seed funding led by General Catalyst, building humanoids for hazardous work.
  • Warehouse robotics, New York: Ultra Robotics raised a $50M Series A to scale manufacturing and deployments.
  • AI agents, New York and San Francisco: Melius raised $20M for creative-work agents, and Photon raised $4.5M for agents inside messaging apps.

The recruiting market

AI-assisted recruiting marketplaces keep scaling; Paraform reports crossing $100M in annualized revenue. More automated matching means more volume. For a founding hire, the scarce part is still judgment: who can own a hardware-software stack, ship a robot learning pipeline, or stand up production agents alone.

What founders should do this quarter

  • Write the founding role around outcomes for the first six months, not a stack list.
  • Decide early between a generalist builder and a domain specialist in controls, ML, or infrastructure.
  • Run a tight loop: founder call, real work sample, short trial, offer within two weeks.

What engineers should watch

Defense, humanoid, and agent companies raising seed rounds right now are where founding equity is most meaningful. Ask about runway, the first customer, and who you report to.
