An offer is the start of diligence

A strong interview process helps both sides make a clear decision. Before accepting, move beyond the pitch and understand the mandate, the people around it, and the conditions required to succeed.

Questions about the seat

  • What must be true after six months for this hire to be working
  • Which decisions will I own without approval
  • Why is the role open now
  • What changed in the mandate during the search

Questions about the team

  • Who sets technical or commercial direction
  • Where does the team disagree today
  • How are difficult decisions documented and revisited
  • Which capability is missing from the current group

Questions about operating reality

  • What does the stated work model look like in practice
  • Which deadlines or dependencies already shape the first quarter
  • How does the company balance speed, reliability, and customer commitments
  • What support exists for relocation or work authorization, when relevant
The useful question is not whether the company has risk. It is whether you understand the risk you are choosing.

Listen for clarity, not perfection

Early-stage teams may not have polished answers. That can be reasonable. Look for candor, consistent context across interviewers, and leaders who can separate known constraints from unresolved decisions.
